Academic Integrity / Misconduct Scenarios

MYP Personal Project Plagiarism Scenarios*

Please read each of the following scenarios with your partner and discuss your answers. Does the scenario constitute academic dishonesty or not?

  1. You copy and paste a paragraph word-for-word from a source without any acknowledgment. Is that okay?

  2. You paraphrase (put into your own words) several lines from an article in Newsela. Do you need to cite?

  3. You use several ideas from a paragraph you read on a reputable website. Some of what you use takes the form of paraphrased material, and other sections are directly quoted using quotation marks. In both instances you have used in-text citations, which direct the reader to your complete works cited list at the end of the paper. Is this all right?

  4. You notice that some of your research for an I&S project relates to what you are investigating for your personal project. You are excited because this means you can recycle the content for part of your personal project report. This seems like good time management to you. Is this okay?

  5. Your good friend is in danger of failing the IB Science class you are both in. If he fails, he will be placed on academic probation & won’t get to play in the upcoming ISSEA Volleyball tournament. He knows you are an excellent student and asks you to sit nearby so he can see your answers during the upcoming test. You don’t love this idea, but, since you’re not the one copying answers, you figure you will not be charged with academic dishonesty. Are you right?

  6. You need some images of Minecraft for your EE. You go onto Google, find some good ones, and put them into your personal project report. You include the URL below the image. Is this okay?

  7. You find some great statistics to support your ideas about reducing the use of single use plastics. But you forgot to keep track of where you got the stats. You Google the content, find something close, and cite that source. Is this okay?
